Krakow is located in the historical region of Lesser Poland (Małopolska, lat. Polonia Minor). This is not to be equated with today’s Lesser Poland Voivodeship, which is many times smaller, but refers to the territory located on the upper and middle Vistula, which at the end of the 10th century was annexed to that of Mieszko I (d. 992) ruled Greater Poland and was extended to the Union of Lublin (1569) by the territories of Red Prussia, Podlaskie, Volhynia and Podolia. As a result of the partitions of Poland-Lithuania, Lesser Poland fell to Austria; the northern part was granted to the Russian partitioning power in 1815.
