Kiel was founded in the 13th century. At that time, the border with Denmark was already a little north of the Kiel Fjord. That is why the city was founded as the northernmost port city in the Holy Roman Empire. It belonged to the Principality of Holstein, the southern part of today’s Schleswig-Holstein.

Kiel soon became a member of the Hanseatic League, a trade association that extended over the entire Baltic Sea. However, trade did not go as well as in nearby Hanseatic cities such as Lübeck or Hamburg. So Kiel left the Hanseatic League again in the 16th century. In modern times, Kiel also belonged to Denmark for some time. Since 1900, Kiel has been a large city with over 100,000 inhabitants.

Today, Kiel is the northernmost major city in Germany. The Port of Kiel is an important base of the German Navy. This is the part of the army that provides security at sea. In addition, Kiel is also important for merchant ships due to the Kiel Canal, which flows into the Baltic Sea here.

Today, Kiel is the state capital of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein and the seat of the bishop. The city is located on the Kiel Fjord and thus has direct access to the sea. The origins of the city were built in 1233 on a peninsula between the fjord and the Small Kiel, an inland lake that is now located in the middle of the city. She received city rights in 1242. In the Middle Ages and in the coming centuries, maritime trade meant little to the city, and the university, founded in 1665, brought about a revival. Only in the 19th century. Jh. when Kiel fell to Prussia and soon became a war port of the German Empire, rapid growth began. This became a disaster for the city and led to its almost complete destruction during the Second World War. After the war, a rapid, but often thoughtless reconstruction of the city took place, which is now known not only as a naval and passenger port, but also by the annual Kiel Week with its sailing competitions and the Olympic sailing competitions held here.
