What country is Jerusalem in today?
Jerusalem is the largest city in Israel with almost one million inhabitants. For the Israelites, it is the capital. Many Palestinians, however, believe that the city does not belong to Israel at all, or only the western part of it. This always leads to hatred and war.
For the Jews, Jerusalem is the most important place of their faith. Their temples used to stand there, and the kings ruled from there. For Christians, Jerusalem is very important, because it was there that Jesus was crucified and buried. Muslims believe that Muhammad ascended to heaven from Jerusalem. For many centuries they ruled over the city. For these reasons, Jerusalem is called “a holy city”. So far, it has not been possible to reconcile the claims of all religions or to clearly assign the city to a single religion.
Today, almost two-thirds of Jews and one-third of Muslims live in the city. Most of the rest are Christians. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which attracts two million tourists every year. It is divided into quarters that have belonged to certain believers for hundreds of years, such as the Jewish Quarter. The most controversial place for the Jews and Muslims is the Temple Mount. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre means a lot to Christians.
Jerusalem – an ancient city, rooted in the history of mankind like no other place, surrounded by legends and myths…
… and a modern, multicultural metropolis where more than three-quarters of a million people work every day.
Jerusalem is the capital of the State of Israel, as well as the spiritual and cultural center of the Jewish people. At the same time, it is the holiest site of Christianity and the third holiest city of Islam.
