What country does Jakarta belong to?
Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and has about 9.5 million inhabitants. Here poor meets rich, modern skyscrapers meet slums, tradition meets modernity. Jakarta is the economic, political and cultural center of Indonesia.

The city is located in the bay of Jakarta on the island of Java. The city was once called Sunda Kelapa and was renamed Jayakarta in 1527 after the victory of the Islamic prince Fatahillah, which meant something like “Great Victory”. A few years later, the city became the trading post of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). However, the Dutch razed it to the ground in 1619. As a result, the new city was named in Batavia. Even today, the influence of the Dutch is visible in the architecture of Jakarta. Only in 1942 Batavia was renamed Jakarta, and the colonial rule of the Dutch was over. Today Jakarta is a vibrant metropolis.
Jakarta (formerly Batavia, also Djakarta) is the capital of the Republic of Indonesia and, with an estimated population of 8.5 million, is the most populous city in Indonesia. If you count the entire catchment area, the estimated population increases to 17.5 million inhabitants (as of January 1, 2005), which makes Jakarta one of the largest metropolitan regions in the world.
The city was founded at the beginning of the 17th century. from the Dutch, when the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigte Ooste Indische Compagnie, Abk.: VOC) established a trading branch there. In the course of time, canals were drawn according to the Dutch model and stone houses were built on their shores. Above all, the administrative buildings, such as the Governor’s Palace and the railway station, underlined the role of Jakarta as the seat of the Dutch colonial power.
Jakarta is located on the Bay of Jakarta in the northwest of the island of Java, which is one of the large Sunda Islands. The Ciliwung River flows through the urban area into the Java Sea north of Jakarta. The capital does not belong to the province of West Java, but represents its own special province. The offshore island group Kepulauan Seribu (indon. about the 1,000 islands) belong to the urban area and serves mainly as a recreational area.
