You can find Italy on the Apennine Peninsula, which protrudes long and rather narrow into the Mediterranean Sea. To the east, as a side basin of the Mediterranean Sea, is the Adriatic Sea, which thus separates Italy from the Balkan Peninsula. To the west of Italy are the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea, which also belong to the Mediterranean Sea. In the Tyrrhenian Sea are the islands of Sardinia and Sicily, as well as Corsica, which, however, belongs to France.

Italy stretches from north to south for a total of almost 1200 kilometers. At the very north, the southern part of the Alps belongs to Italy. The Alps move the north of Italy.

On the border with France is the highest mountain in the Alps, Mont Blanc. The border is controversial. Therefore, Italy sees Mont Blanc as the highest peak of their country (4810 meters), but France sees a slightly lower elevation, Mont Blanc de Courmayeur (4748 meters high).

The Alps are joined to the south by the Po Plain. It is a fertile lowland named after the Po River, which flows through it from west to east and flows into the Adriatic Sea.

Italy is located on the Apennine Peninsula, which was named after the Apennines. This is a mountain range that runs through the entire peninsula. With 1200 kilometers, the Apennines are very long. It has its highest point with the 2912 meter high summit Corno Grande in the Gran Sasso.

Italy also has some islands. Sicily is the largest island of the Mediterranean Sea. It is located in front of the “boot tip” of Italy in the southwest. In Sicily, the mountain range of the Apennines continues. The volcano Etna is also located here. At 3323 meters, it is Europe’s highest volcano and still active.

Sardinia is the second largest Mediterranean island. It is located west of mainland Italy. Many other small islands also belong to Italy. Elba, Capri and Ischia are particularly well known as holiday islands.

Italy also has some lakes. In the north of the country are Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore (which partly belongs to Switzerland) and Lake Como. Lake Bolsena and Lake Trasimeno are located in central Italy.
