India is located in South Asia and occupies most of the Indian subcontinent. Highlands and mountains separate this area from the rest of the continent.
India is a federal republic with 28 states. Germany is also a federal Republic and consists of several federal states.
The natural border of India in the north is formed by the Himalayan Mountains. Part of the country is enclosed by the Indian Ocean. India borders Pakistan in the northwest, the country with which it formed a unity some time ago. There are further borders with Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Off the southern coast of India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives are located in the Indian Ocean.
The name India is derived from a river, the Indus. For a long time, when people spoke of India, they meant that there were many more countries than the current territory of India. Only since the founding of the state of India and its independence in 1947 has India been understood as the current territory of the country as a national territory and less as a subcontinent with many more states.
