What country is Iceland belong to?
Iceland is located in the north of Europe. It belongs to Northern Europe. Because Iceland is an island, it is an island state. Iceland is located in the Atlantic Ocean just south of the Arctic Circle. The nearest neighbor is Greenland in the northwest. In between is the Strait of the Denmark Strait. To the north of Iceland lies the Greenland Sea, to the east the European North Sea, to the south the sea is called the North Atlantic.
About eleven percent of the area of Iceland is glaciers. The largest of them is the Vatnajökull. It stretches over 8100 square kilometers – that’s more than 252,000 football fields!
Volcanoes are another feature of Iceland’s landscape. There are two plates under Iceland. They are separated by a mountain range, mostly below sea level, the “Mid-Atlantic Ridge”. Iceland thus forms one of the highest elevations of this mountain range. Where the two plates meet, most of the volcanoes are located. There are 31 active volcanoes in Iceland. Some volcanoes are located under glaciers. Due to the volcanic activity, there are also geysers here. These are hot springs that regularly emit fountains of water.
There is a lot of water in Iceland, namely in the form of rivers, lakes and waterfalls. The most water-rich waterfall is the Urriðafoss. It is 40 meters wide, but the drop height is only 6 meters. The highest waterfall is the Morsárfoss, which falls 227 meters deep.
The interior is formed by the Icelandic Highlands. It is very dry and windy here. In addition to volcanoes and glaciers, there are also stone deserts, lava fields and rivers running in deep gorges.
The longest river in the country is the Thjorsa. In Icelandic it is written as follows: Þjórsá. It flows through Iceland for 230 kilometers, from northeast to southwest. It flows into the sea at the Urriðafoss waterfall. The highest mountain is Hvannadalshnúkur with a height of 2110 meters. It is located in the southeast of the island.
