Ibiza is famous, among other things, for salt production. Salt has been produced from seawater in the southeast of the island for over 2500 years. This happens in a saline, a plant for salt extraction.

Ibiza was discovered a long time ago. in 645 BC, the Carthaginians came to the island. This was a people who tried to win over as much land as possible in the Mediterranean region. Then the Romans conquered Ibiza. They were followed by the Moors from the north of Africa and, finally, the Catalans, who later became part of Spain. All of them left their mark on the island. This can be seen especially in Ibiza Town: at the city wall, the fortress and at the many churches.

The island is known for the fact that many dropouts, also called hippies, have lived here since 1960. They wanted to live differently than at home, where everything was strictly regulated. That’s why they lived in very simple accommodation and tried to get by with little money and work. A few of them still live on the island, especially in the area around San Carlos. But today, many rich and famous people spend their holidays here. Actors, athletes and politicians, for example. It is therefore said that Ibiza is the “island of the rich and the beautiful”.

Locating Ibiza on a map can be more or less easy, depending on the initial situation of each individual and their geographical knowledge. Most Europeans know exactly where Ibiza is located: it is a Mediterranean island located close to the east coast of Spain. It belongs to a group of islands, among which there are also Formentera and Mallorca. But we need to be even more precise. Where exactly is Ibiza located?

Ibiza is located about 80 kilometers from Valencia and is the third largest island of the Balearic Islands, an autonomous region of Spain. Its capital is Eivissa, better known as Vila. It includes other municipalities such as Santa Eulària des Riu, Sant Antoni de Portmany and Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, in addition to other localities, including Santa Agnés de Sa Corona, Santa Gertudris, Sant Jordi, Sant Miquel, Sant Rafel and Sant Mateu. All villages were named after saints because the settlements were built around the individual parishes in the late 18th century.

The history of the last centuries also provides information about where Ibiza is located. The Carthaginians, around 654 BC, gave the island the name Ibossim and five centuries later the island was called Ebusus by the Romans. These were followed by the Byzantines, vandals and Arabs, from whom she was baptized Yebisah. Later, the island was invaded by Aragonese, and the numerous pirate attacks suffered by the people must not be forgotten. All these ethnic groups pursued the same goal – the use of the strategic island location, for the opening of transport routes through the Mediterranean, to trade in white gold and the salt of Ibiza. The salt trade thus became one of the oldest identity features of the island. The numerous towers built along the coast as well as the city wall of Dalt Vila still bear witness to the attacks and invasions that took place in past centuries.
