Honiara is the capital of Solomon Islands. It is located on the main island of Guadalcanal and is the center of history, politics and culture of the island state.
Honiara – Almost 1000 small islands and atolls form the national territory of the Solomon Islands. The capital has about 90,000 inhabitants, which is about 15% of the population of the Solomon Islands.

The country of 1000 islands is inhabited by about 700,000 inhabitants. About 20% of the population lives on the main island of Guadalcanal. Here, in turn, people live mainly in the capital Honiara. With 90,000 inhabitants, the population is comparatively small for an international capital. But the history of the Solomon Islands is very interesting and well documented. The area of the capital is only 22km2, which corresponds to a quarter of the area of the Portuguese capital Lisbon.
The country’s politics are still largely based on the former colonial power Great Britain and the country is part of the Commonwealth of Nations. Thus, the official head of state to this day is the English monarch. He is currently represented locally by Governor-General David Vunagi.
Diving in crystal clear water, exploring the flora and fauna of the rainforest, relaxing on the beach – all this comes to mind to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. But would you have thought that Guadalcanal is the location of some Hollywood movies? Because the main island of the Solomon Islands is comparatively small with a good 5,000 square kilometers, but all the more historical and rich in attractions. Reason enough to introduce the movie star once!
This small spot in the South Pacific gained historical fame as the scene of fierce battles between Americans and Japanese during the Second World War. The legendary “Battle of Guadalcanal” in 1942 and 1943 not only caused numerous deaths, but also about 50 warships of both sides were sunk, which earned the waters north of the island the name “Iron Bottom Sound”, i.e. “Eisengrund-Sund”. Several major feature films, such as the most recent “The Island of the Damned”, have focused on the Battle of Guadalcanal and thus made the island famous.
