Hiroshima is a city in Japan. It is located in the south of the island of Honshū. This is the largest of the islands that make up Japan. With a population of around two million, Hiroshima is one of the largest cities in the country. In terms of area, it is even larger than Tokyo, the capital of Japan.
At the beginning of modern times, the powerful Mori family had a castle built. Today’s Hiroshima was built around this castle. Especially in the 19th century, the city grew due to the expansion of the port and the railway lines.
However, Hiroshima gained worldwide fame in a tragic way during the Second World War. The Americans fought against the Japanese in the Pacific. By the summer of 1945, the war had already lasted a very long time and caused many deaths on both sides. Nevertheless, the Japanese did not want to give up. In order to end the war faster, the Americans decided to drop two nuclear bombs over Japan. At that time, this weapon was still very new and people knew rather little about it.
We remember Hiroshima, in the west of the main island of Japan, above all as the site of the first atomic bomb that claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people. The city was almost completely destroyed and thus became a sad celebrity all over the world.
