Where is Herne Located

Herne is a big city and is located in the middle of the Ruhr area. The city has about 161,000 inhabitants and belongs to the administrative district of Arnsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia. Herne is a member of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe and the Regionalverband Ruhr. Harrani is the original name of the town and is first mentioned around 880 in the tax register of the Benedictine abbey. The city within its current borders is the result of several territorial reforms, as a result of which surrounding municipalities, including the former large city of Wanne-Eickel, were incorporated into Herne or merged with this city. In the past, Herne was characterized by coal mining. The Shamrock, Constantin, Mont Cenis and Friedrich the Great collieries were well known.
