The area around Haugesund is the area where the Vikings lived and where the kings of the Vikings had their seat. In and around the city you can experience the unique Viking history. Especially Avaldsnes on the island of Karmoy, the stone cross Krosshaugen north of Haugesund and the lighthouse of Ryvarden, where there is a museum, a café and an art gallery, are worth a visit. However, the absolute highlight is the 4-day Viking Festival, which takes place in June at the Viking farm in Avaldsnes. The purpose of this festival is to revive the history of the Vikings.
