The city of Harstad is located in a scenic and strategic location on Norway’s largest island Hinnøya and is the gateway to Vesterålen and the Lofoten Islands. Not only the northern lights and the midnight sun guarantee an unforgettable stay in Harstad. The long and bright summer days are perfect for hiking in the mountains, while optimal skiing conditions and impressive northern lights make for a unique winter spectacle. Harstad is a good starting point to explore the northernmost inhabited archipelago in the world. With events that bring people from near and far together, such as the Arctic Wine Festival, the BAKgården Music Festival and the Ilios Festival, Harstad has become a cultural center. The mixture of old and contemporary architecture in combination with many cafés and restaurants create a cozy atmosphere in Harstad.
What county is Harstad?
Located not far from the islands of Vesterålen, the islands of Lofoten and the island of Senja, Harstad is a place that has remained largely undiscovered by tourists.
Coming to Harstad just because of the city certainly does not justify the long way, but even more so the detour to the neighboring island groups.
Far up in the north of Norway, north of the Arctic Circle, lies Harstad, which with its 25,000 inhabitants is the third municipality of northern Norway.. I spent only one day here on the way to the south of the island of Senja, from where I took a ferry. On this day I discovered a typical Norwegian small town, where only a few tourists get lost.
Everyone gets their money’s worth in Harstad – whether it’s a hike to the surrounding mountain peaks, a bike ride on the neighboring island groups or even a cultural program, especially in the historic center of Trondenes, on the farm of Røkenes and on the schooner Anna Rogde. There is even a water park with a grotto landscape, the Grottebadet.
Overall, Harstad is the perfect place for a trip off the beaten track, especially in combination with a side trip to the neighboring island groups (Lofoten, Vesterålen, Senja).
