Harbin, located in the northeast of China directly on the Russian border, has a long and varied history. As the homeland of the Manchurians, who lived exclusively here until the 10th century, the country repeatedly experienced power struggles. At the end of the 19th century, the northern part of Manchuria was occupied by Russia. The Russian-influenced architecture can still be seen in the older parts of the city today. In the wake of the October Revolution, many Russians fled to Harbin. Later, years of occupation by Japanese troops followed, and again Soviet administration after the end of the Second World War. It was only in 1949 that China regained sovereignty over the territory.
The city has extensive coal and oil deposits and is characterized by its heavy industry. Tourist attractions include the Songhua River, Taiyang Island, Tiger Farm with 800 Siberian tigers and Zhaolin Park. The Dragon Tower, completed in 2003, is one of the tallest free-standing steel truss towers in the world at a height of 336 meters. Every year the Ice and Snow Festival and the ice sculpture exhibition take place in Harbin, which attract thousands of tourists.
