Where is Hamburg located in the world?
The federal state of Hamburg (official name: Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg) is a city-state in northern Germany and has an area of 755.26 km2. Hamburg is not located by the sea, but is 110 kilometers from the North Sea. In fact, it is located in the North German Plain, at the confluence of the Alster and Bille Rivers into the Elbe. This in turn flows 110 kilometers further northwest near Cuxhaven into the North Sea. The two banks of the Elbe are connected by the Elbe Bridges and the Old and New Elbe Tunnels.
The port on the Elbe is open to the sea (tidal port) and extends mainly on the south bank of the North Elbe. Thus, it is located opposite the districts of St. Pauli and Altona, approximately from the Veddel to Finkenwerder.
The marshes lying directly on the river have been flooded by the floodwaters of the North Sea for centuries. The land south and north of the river is geest, higher-lying areas created by the sand and scree deposits of the glaciers during the ice Ages. Meanwhile, the Elbe is diked on both sides.
