Traces of human settlement of the area and burial mounds date back to the Stone Age. In 1580, the place was first mentioned in a document as a port for wood. After several Swedish attacks were repulsed in the middle of the 17th century, the city of Fredrikshald was founded in 1665. Between 1661 and 1670, old defensive structures were expanded to form the Fredriksten Fortress. Even in the 18th century there were again and again unsuccessful attacks by the Swedes. It was not until 1814 that the fortress was hit so hard by the Swedes that it was abandoned. A devastating fire destroyed almost the entire city and the remains of the fortress in 1826. After the reconstruction, the economic upswing also succeeded. in 1929 the village was renamed back to Halden.
