Guam is 544 square kilometers in size – about half the size of the German capital Berlin. It is an outside territory of the United States. This means that the island is not located in the direct vicinity of the North American continent. But it still officially belongs to the USA. Guam is close to the countries of the Philippines and Japan.

About 160,000 people live on Guam. They are officially considered citizens of the United States – but are not allowed to do everything that citizens on the mainland are allowed to do. For example, they are not allowed to have a say in who will be the next president. They are only allowed to participate in the primaries.
An important employer on the small island is the military. In 2014, there were 6000 soldiers stationed on the island.
