Ghana gave its name to itself when it became independent in 1957. Previously, it was a British colony. During this time, Ghana was called the Gold Coast, because a lot of gold was found in its soil. The word “Ghana” is meant to remind of a great empire in West Africa.

The shape of the land is almost rectangular. From north to south it stretches for about 700 kilometers, from west to east for about 450 kilometers.
Ghana has three landscape areas: the coast in the south, the rainforest in the middle and the savannah in the north. So it is getting drier and drier from south to north. From about the middle of the country, the rainforest first turns into a tree savannah and then into a grass savannah.
