The Galata Tower ( Galata Kulesi ) Istanbul, is the symbolic building of the city of Istanbul. In the 6th century, it was first built as a lighthouse, after which it served for various purposes. The first flight in history began at the Galata Tower. The Ottoman air pioneer Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi completed a flight over the adjacent district from the tower with wooden wings on his arms.

In 1967, the tower was completely restored and received its current appearance. Visitors can take the elevator to the high floors. At the top there is a café and a restaurant, which are open between 9.00 and 00.00. A viewing platform can be reached past the restaurant. From there you have an impressive view over Istanbul and the Bay of the Golden Horn.

For visitors who do not want to go to the restaurant, the tower is open daily between 9.00 and 20.00. The entrance and the trip to the top cost 11 Turkish lire, which is about 4 euros.

The Galata Tower is 70 meters high, has an inner diameter of 9 meters, outer diameter 14 meters. According to assumptions, the plant should weigh 10 tons. During the Crusades, the Galata Tower was very badly affected, and again renewed by the Geneuser (cenevizliler ) with the new name Jesus Tower.
