Freiburg im Breisgau is a city in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. They say Freiburg im Breisgau so that you don’t confuse it with another Freiburg, like the one in Switzerland. About 230,000 people live in Freiburg.

The city has existed since the Middle Ages. From the year 1368, the Habsburgs ruled over Freiburg, who already ruled over Austria. In the 17th century, it also once fell to France. Napoleon made the Breisgau part of Baden in 1805. From 1871 Baden and thus also Freiburg belonged to the German Empire. Since 1949 it has been part of the Federal Republic of Germany.
There has been a university in Freiburg since 1457. She is one of the oldest in Germany. The Freiburg Minster is a large and famous church. It is the symbol of the city. The minster was built for several hundred years, it was completed in 1513. Very close to Freiburg is the Feldberg, which with a height of 1493 meters is the highest mountain in the Black Forest.

Freiburg im Breisgau is located in the very south of the country in the state of Baden-Württemberg, at the foot of the Black Forest. It is only about 46 km from the French Mulhouse in Alsace and about 50 km from the Swiss Basel. It is located in the so-called border triangle. The city is surrounded by the Kaiserstuhl, the Black Forest and the Markgräfler Land. From the “Schauinsland”, Freiburg’s local mountain, you have a wonderful view of the whole region and the Rhine plain. Freiburg can look back on a long history. Already in 1120 the city rights were granted to her and around 1200 the construction of the minster was started, next to the Bächle one of the landmarks of the city. The city has a lot to offer – also for city trips. A stroll through the historic old town with the Freiburg Minster, the Old and New Town Hall or the historic department store is just as much a part of it as relaxing in one of the many cafes and pubs.
