With an area of 547,026 km2 (including Corsica, excluding overseas regions), the Republic of France (officially: République française; short: France) is the largest country in Western Europe. Both the north-south and east-west extension is approximately 1 000 km. The island of Corsica also belongs to the national territory. In the north, the country borders on the English Channel, in the northeast on Belgium and Luxembourg, in the east the Rhine, the Jura and the Alps form a natural border with the countries of Germany, Switzerland and Italy. In the south of France is the Mediterranean Sea , here the country borders on the Principality of Monaco. The mountain range of the Pyrenees forms the border with Andorra and Spain, in the west of the country lies the Atlantic Ocean.

After centuries of wars between France and Germany, the two countries have been close friends since the middle of the last century. It is said that they form the backbone of the European Union. Both countries have been involved in European unification from the very beginning. There is a democratically elected parliament in the Republic of France. The president elected by the people has a lot of power. France is therefore also referred to as “presidential democracy”.

The highly specialized agriculture of the country with significant viticulture plays a leading role in Europe. However, industry and the traditionally strong service sector play an even greater role in the economy as a whole. France is also a classic tourist country. The well-developed transport network is oriented to Paris. The Eurotunnel has been a direct link with Great Britain since 1994. France is considered a pioneer of the European Union and belongs to the eurozone.

France is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the English Channel to the northwest. To the northeast are Belgium and Luxembourg, to the east Germany, Switzerland and Italy are the neighboring countries. In the south, France is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Spainand Andorra (Figure 1).
France is divided administratively into 96 departments, which are located in 22 regions. The country also has numerous overseas territories. These are the remains of the French colonial empire, which until the middle of the 20th century included parts of Africa, Southeast Asia, Central America and Oceania. Some of these areas, such as Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion or French Guiana, are so-called overseas departments and have the same rights as the departments located directly in the mother country.
