The American city of El Paso is not a pretty place. In the middle of the desert it is dusty and the cultural program is quite manageable. Südlink columnist Lourdes Cárdenas explains why she still enjoys living here. The city offers a distinctive blend of two cultures. If you like to kill two birds with one stone, you are in the right place in El Paso. This city in southwest Texas borders directly on Mexico – and this is reflected in everyday urban life everywhere.
El Paso is located in the western corner of Texas, near the border with Chihuahua (Mexico). So you can imagine how many Mexican influences there are in the city! There is a lot to see and experience in this characteristic city, which is surrounded by the desert and the special flora and fauna. From lively art galleries to famous historical sites, delicious (spicy) food to cultural attractions.
When travelers come to the Californian San Diego, it is usually clear: a short detour across the Mexican border to Tijuana must be. The situation is somewhat different on the border of TEXAS with Mexico, in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez. While El Paso is usually ranked among the ten safest cities in the USA, Juárez can be found in the top 3 of the most dangerous cities in the world. This difference on the one hand and the cultural unity on the other hand make El Paso (and for me personally also Juárez) an exceptionally exciting destination.
