This makes DePaul the 13th largest private university by enrollment in the United States and the largest private university in Illinois. The student body represents a wide range of religious, ethnic and geographical backgrounds, including over 60 foreign countries.
DePaul’s intercollegiate sports teams, known as the DePaul Blue Demons, participate in the Big East Conference.
Originally called St. Vincent’s College, DePaul University was founded in 1898 by the Congregation of missionary priests and Brothers, the so-called Vincentians. A follower of the 17th-century French priest Saint Vincent de Paul, they founded the university to serve Roman Catholic children of immigrants.
Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is DePaul’s elementary school. We serve the entire university through our courses in the Liberal Studies and University Honors programs (our names for “General Education”) and solid joint curricula. We are dedicated to the life of the Spirit, as well as to the Vincentian missions of service to the community and social justice.
The success of the college is due to our dedicated faculty and staff who share the university’s values, vision and enthusiasm for learning. At DePaul, teaching comes first. All of our classes are taught by faculty members, not assistants. Our faculties design their specialties and apply the latest knowledge and methods in their classrooms, as well as in their scientific and creative work.
