In 1786, Columbia replaced the coastal city of Charleston as the capital of South Carolina. The palm tree, the symbol of South Carolina, is omnipresent in the cityscape of Columbia. Among the most famous buildings are the Art Museum, the Museum of African-American Culture and the university, founded in 1801. The town twinning, which was concluded in 2000, is the result of a connection that Rhineland-Palatinate and South Carolina entered into in 1997 in order to promote exchange at the municipal level.
