This town is located in the northeast of Puerto Rico and covers an area of 124 square kilometers (77 miles). It is the fourth most populous city on the island. It is also known as the “land of the giants” and as the village of the “tumba brazos”.

The first name is due to one of its inhabitants: Felipe Birriel Fernández, nicknamed “the giant of Carolina” and who was seven feet and eleven inches tall. The second responds to the ancient practice of resolving conflicts in a machete duel. As of the 2000 census, its total population was 186,076 Carolinians. Its territory is organized into the following neighborhoods: Barrazas, Cacao, Cangrejo Arriba, Canovanillas, Carolina Pueblo, Carruzos, Marín González, Sabana Abajo, San Antón, Santa Cruz and Trujillo Bajo. Its patron saint is San Fernando de las Carolinas.

The economy of Carolina has evolved throughout the twentieth century. At first, its economic development revolved around agriculture, with sugar cane being its main crop. Currently, this village is highly industrialized. There are more than 100 factories that produce electrical and electronic equipment, scientific instruments, metal packaging, clothing, chewing gum and pharmaceutical products, plastics and chemicals, among others. In addition, tourism is of the utmost importance, especially in the Isla Verde area, which has hotels, recreational facilities and the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.

It corresponds to the region of the northern coastal plain. Towards the north of the municipality the soils are low and swampy.
