Bulgaria is located on the Balkan Peninsula. This term is sometimes used interchangeably with Southeastern Europe. In addition, sometimes they just say Balkan. Where the northern line lies is not exactly defined. In any case, Bulgaria is one of them. Below you will find a map highlighting the countries of the Balkans.
In Bulgaria there are several mountain ranges and two large lowlands. The one lowland lies in the north and is formed by the Danube. The Danube flows here as a border river with Romania. The Danube lowland is very flat. It merges in the south into a hilly landscape, the pre-Balkans.
It is joined by the Balkan Mountains. It runs through Bulgaria from west to east and gave its name to the Balkan Peninsula. In the east, the Balkan Mountains end at the Black Sea, at Cape Emine.
In the south-east of Bulgaria is the second lowland. It is crossed by the Mariza River. This lowland is also called the Upper Thracian Plain. It belongs to the landscape of Thrace, which continues to Greece and Turkey.
In the south-west of the country there are several more mountain ranges, for example, the Vitosha Mountains. The Rila Mountains and the Pirin Mountains are the highest of the southwestern mountains, they are high mountains. The highest peaks here are over 2900 meters high. There are no trees growing up here anymore and there is snow for a long time. The rhodopes are slightly lower. Its highest peak measures 2191 meters. As a result of washouts, many caves, gorges and unusual rock landscapes have appeared here.
