The 134-meter-high “hanger” stretches impressively over the Wembley Stadium, with its 90,000 spectator seats, the second largest in Europe. Equipped with a special LED lighting system, the mighty arch sometimes shines in the colors of the football teams, sometimes in the rainbow spectrum and flickers far beyond Brent. Then the subway cars of the Metropolitan Line groan under the weight of thousands and thousands of fans.
It was pop star George Michael who played the first concert here after the stadium was completed in 2007. A home game for him; he grew up in Brent’s Kingsbury neighborhood. In honor of the musician who died in 2016, the London artist Dawn Mellor conjured up a house-high street art mural in 2020 as part of the art project “Brent Biennial”. If you want to see this mural yourself, you can find it here: 499 Kingsbury Road.
