Which country is Belize in?
Belize is a country in Central America. It is pronounced read-out. It is the second smallest country in Central America. Only El Salvador is even smaller.
Belize is located in the southeast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Until 1981, the country was called British Honduras and was a British colony. With independence, it was then called Belize, after the Belize River, the river that flows through the country.
In the north, Belize borders Mexico. The Hondo River forms the natural boundary. Belize borders Guatemala to the west and south. To the east is the Caribbean Sea, which is a secondary sea of the Atlantic Ocean. Belize is the only country in Central America that does not have access to the Pacific Ocean.
The north of the country has formed on a former seabed. The land here is flat. Bushes and trees such as cedars, pines, sapote or mahogany trees grow here. To the south there is a savannah landscape. It rains little here.
Further south, the Maya Mountains rise. The highest peaks such as Doyle’s Delight (1124 meters high) and Victoria Peak (1120 meters high) are also located here. The Maya Mountains extend into Guatemala. Already around 1200 BC the Maya settled here.
At the very south, tropical rainforest grows. So much rain falls here that the trees never shed their leaves. Countless species of orchids, ferns, lianas and tropical trees grow here.
