Belize is located on the Caribbean Sea in the southeast of the Yucatán Peninsula and borders Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west. It is the only country in Central America with English as its official language. The culture is influenced by both the Maya and Africa. About a third of the inhabitants have African ancestors. Belize is a small country and has only about 327,000 inhabitants, of which about 14,000 live in the capital Belmopan. The former capital Belize City has nevertheless remained the economic center of the country.
The highlight in Belize is the largely untouched landscape with tropical rainforests, an incredible variety of plants and animals and the only Jaguar reserve in the world. Belize is also a diving and beach paradise. Off the coast is the world’s second largest coral reef with hundreds of small coral islands, the so-called “cayes”. The Barrier Reef stretches from Cancún in Mexico to Honduras. In addition, 3 of the 4 atolls in the Caribbean belong to Belize, including the world-famous Blue Hole. And last but not least, Belize also has a few small and fine ruins from the Mayan period. Belize offers the active traveler dozens of activities, for example, snorkeling, bird watching, trekking, kayaking, horseback riding, sailing or diving. With an average temperature of 29°C, Belize is a year-round destination with a Caribbean flair.
