Where is Barranquilla located in the world?
Barranquilla is located in the Atlántico department, is considered the most important coastal city and replaced Puerto Colombia as the most important seaport in the last century. The city also bears the name “Curramba la Bella” (the celebrating beauty), because here the African, Caribbean, Arab or, for example, Turkish influences make the industrial and port city a culturally interesting metropolis.

Barranquilla hosts one of the best and most famous carnivals in the world. On this occasion, the Colombians’ willingness to celebrate is particularly pronounced once a year- due to its uniqueness, diversity and cultural richness, the Carnival of Barranquilla was declared an Oral Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003. It is one of the five most important, largest, best and certainly also one of the most unique carnivals worldwide. After the Rio Carnival, it is even the second largest in the world!
The course of the carnival
It is celebrated on three days – each day is accompanied by a different motto.
Day: The official start of the Carnival of Barranquilla is a Saturday on which the “Battle of Flowers” (Batalla de Flores) takes place. The carnival queen leads hundreds of folkloric dance groups past the palcos (grandstands). A sea of colors and exuberant music accompanies this procession, which begins in the early morning hours and ends late at night.
Day: On Sunday, countless dance groups celebrate the “Grand Parade of Traditions” (Gran Parada de Tradición).
Day: On Rose Monday, the “Big Orchestra” celebrates the Carnival Tuesday with the ritual funeral of Joselito. Exuberant atmosphere, parties until late at night and Caribbean temperatures make this spectacle a very special event.
