Which country is Barbados in?
Barbados belongs to the archipelago of the Lesser Antilles. However, Barbados falls out of the band that these form, because the island is located to the east of it. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean and not in the Caribbean Sea, but is still counted among the Caribbean Islands. The island state also includes another small, uninhabited island called Culpepper Island. It is actually just a rock and measures just 40 by 50 meters.

Barbados itself is 430 square kilometers in size. This is about the size of the German island of Usedom. The length of the coastline is 97 kilometers. Barbados is rather flat. Towards the center of the island, the land rises. There is also the highest point of the island, Mount Hillaby with 350 meters. To the west coast it drops in terraces, to the east coast on a steeper slope.
The soil of Barbados is made of limestone. It arose from the mass accumulation of corals. This reef limestone then grew in height. Coral reefs are also found in the sea around Barbados. In the northeast, water washed out the lime, creating so many caves. Harrison’s Cave (“Harrison’s Cave”), for example, is a tourist attraction.
Where does the name Barbados come from?
Barbados means “the bearded ones” in both Spanish and Portuguese. What this refers to, you do not know exactly. Perhaps the explorers from Europe called the island so because the long aerial roots of the fig trees reminded them of beards. The Caribs, natives of the Caribbean islands, are also said to have worn beards. Also, therefore, the name may have its origin.
