Bakersfield is young and therefore not a destination for travelers interested in archeology. But if you want to get to know the America of today, you will like Bakersfield and enjoy your stay there.

When you hear the word “California”, you probably think of the sun, the beach, the waves and surfers first. If you think of Californian cities in the second step, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Santa Monica will come to mind. But California is not only made up of these world-famous cities and an admittedly gorgeous coastline. The sunshine state also has a hinterland and it is worth discovering this hinterland. An ideal starting point for this would be Bakersfield. But this friendly university city is also worth a trip in itself.
Admittedly, the city is young and therefore not a destination for travelers interested in archeology. But if you want to get to know the America of today, if you are curious about California beyond the coast and above all if you love music, you will like Bakersfield and enjoy your stay there. Another advantage of the city is that it is very family-friendly. For children of all ages, Bakersfield offers recreational attractions. But the parents are also guaranteed not to be neglected.
In Bakersfield, as in most US states, oil was discovered relatively early. The fields or isolated conveyor towers are still in use today. Kern County is still the second largest county in terms of oil production, about 10 percent of the total US production in 2006 came from this county and the majority from Bakersfield and its suburbs. The subsequent US oil shale and fracking boom has massively increased US production and thus also the percentage, making it one of the most important production regions in the USA.
The second major historical branch of the economy is agriculture. Bakersfield is part of the San Joaquin Valley, which is the 5th most productive agricultural area in the USA.
California is known to tourists as a paradise on earth and entices many people to dream. But it must be admitted that most of the cities are like Bakersfield and are a counterexample to what these dreamers imagine…
My tip:
I will not beat around the bush for a long time: my advice is simply not to go there… But if you do decide to do so, be careful and make sure that you stay inside your car or inside buildings because the air is unbearable…
