The Bahamas includes 700 islands and about 2400 coral reefs, which are called cays. The Bahamas is an island nation. The Bahamas is one of the West Indies Islands. They are located northeast of Cuba. While the Greater and Lesser Antilles border the Caribbean Sea to the north and east, the Bahamas lie further north in the Atlantic Ocean (and thus not in or on the Caribbean Sea). Nevertheless, the Bahamas is often considered the Caribbean.

Only 30 islands are inhabited. The island with the most inhabitants is New Providence, on which the capital Nassau is also located. 70 Percent of all residents of the Bahamas live on New Providence. However, it is one of the smaller islands in terms of area! The second largest island by population is Grand Bahama, where Freeport is also the second largest city, followed by Abaco and Eleuthera. By area, Andros is the largest island, followed by Abaco and Inagua.

All the islands are very flat. And so the highest point of the country is also only 63 meters high. It is the mountain Mount Alvernia on Cat Island (“Cat Island”).

The Spanish conquerors called the islands Baja Mar, which means shallow sea. It later became “Bahamas”.
