Is Azerbaijan a part of Russia?
Azerbaijan is located in the Middle East. Together with Georgia and Armenia, it is one of the three states of the South Caucasus. The Caucasus is a mountain range located between the Black and Caspian Seas. Azerbaijan is bordered by Iran, Armenia, Georgia and Russia. So there are four neighboring countries. To the east is the Caspian Sea.
Azerbaijan has an exclave, that is, national territory, which is separated from the main territory. This is the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. It is located between Armenia, Iran and Turkey. Nagorno-Karabakh, on the other hand, has seceded from Azerbaijan and is independent, but this is not recognized internationally.
In the north, the Great Caucasus Mountains border the country. The highest mountain of Azerbaijan, Bazardüzü, is also located in it. In the south-west is the Little Caucasus, in the south is the Talysh Mountains. Between the mountains, in the center of the country, lies flat land.
The longest river in the country is the Kura, which, coming from Turkey, flows to Georgia and further through Azerbaijan, and then flows into the Caspian Sea. At Mingəçevir, the Kura is dammed to form the largest reservoir in the Caucasus.
In the east of Azerbaijan is the Caspian Sea. But it is actually not a sea at all, but a lake, and indeed the largest lake on Earth. The length of the coast of Azerbaijan is about 800 kilometers. There are also islands in the Caspian Sea, some of which belong to Azerbaijan.
The Abşeron Peninsula, on which the capital Baku is located, but also many oil fields protrude into the Caspian Sea. The seabed and the islands are also of great importance due to oil deposits. Unfortunately, the promotion also led to great damage to the environment.
