Atlanta is the capital of the South American state of Georgia and one of the largest cities in the USA. This city is not so popular with such tourists as Los Angeles, New York and Chicago. However, Atlanta has many advantages. It was in this city that Margaret Mitchell wrote “Gone with the wind”, Doctor Martin Luther King began his activity, and John Stith Pemberton invented Coca-Cola. The city is located at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, which stretch along the entire east coast of the United States and part of Canada.
Where in the USA is Atlanta?
Atlanta was founded in 1837 as the terminus of two railroad lines. Ten years later it received city status, but until the beginning of the Civil War it remained only a small center of freight traffic. As an important transport hub, the city was the target of attack by the Union troops (northern states) in the Civil War. After 75 days of siege, General William Sherman broke the resistance of the Confederates (southern states) and burned the city almost completely. In her novel “Gone with the Wind” Margaret Mitchell describes the historical events in the frame story. Atlanta was rebuilt very quickly after the end of the Civil War and is now considered the “capital of the New South” – and seems much more hectic than its neighbors.
Atlanta is considered one of the most high-ranking business cities in the USA and can score points with headquarters of companies such as the news and media giant CNN, the airline Delta Air Lines, the hardware store chain Home Depot, the beverage company Coca Cola and the parcel delivery company UPS. Atlanta Airport is the largest airport in the world and the hub of the entire Southeast. In 1996, the Summer Olympics were held here. More than two million visitors came to the city, which had realized construction projects in the amount of two billion dollars on the occasion of this mega event.
