What country is Asmara in?
With the Cultural Heritage Site “Asmara: A Modernist African City”, a site in Eritrea was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List for the first time as part of the 41st meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Krakow. The almost completely preserved urban ensemble was built in the first half of the 20th century in the course of Italian colonial policy and is an extraordinary example of modernist urban planning in an African context.

The World Heritage Site, registered in 2017, includes the historical urban ensemble of the Eritrean capital Asmara, which was built in several planning phases between 1893 and 1941, as well as the Arbate Asmera and Abbashawel districts, which were integrated into the planning as originally developed urban districts of the indigenous population. During this period, the Italian colonial power implemented its ideas of a modern capital both from an aesthetic and functional point of view. At the same time, the modernist ideas originating from Europe and North America were adapted to the local conditions, for example through the integration of landscape elements as well as local materials and forms. Thus, Asmara represents a significant intersection of human values in relation to the development of urban development
