Arendal, a small town on the south coast of Norway. in 1992, all 4 districts were made Arendal by a territorial reform. As a result, Arendal now has a population of around 40,000 inhabitants. Arendal is the tenth largest city of Norway.

Arendal is known as the Venice of Scandinavia because it was built on seven islands. In the meantime, the connections to the islands had been filled up with stones. However, there are plans to re-establish water connections between the former islands.

From 1400, the development of a small town began around the protected harbors at the mouth of the Nidelv.

In the 15th century, the nationally known shipping company was founded on the island of Merdø.

In 1863 and 1868 Arendal experienced major city fires, but they spared the historic center of Tyholmen. That’s why you can still find a unique example of wooden house architecture from 3 centuries here today.

Around 1880 Arendal was the largest maritime city in the North.
