Samoa is the epitome of a tropical South Sea paradise: snow-white sandy beaches, palm trees and azure sea promise pure holiday joy. On a cruise to the Polynesian island state, you will stop at the state capital Apia, which is located on the island of Upolu. With about 36,000 inhabitants, it is also the largest city in Samoa and has the only port of the island state. Apia looks back on an eventful history, the relics of which you can still admire today while strolling through the streets of the capital.

What country is Apia in?
There are a total of sixteen Samoan Islands, which together are considered the heart of Polynesia. The early Polynesians sailed from these islands to settle other Pacific islands. Today, this chain of islands is divided into two political entities – the US territory of American Samoa and the independent country of Western Samoa. Much of the charm of the Samoan Islands lies in the simple village life and friendly people, combined with an impressive landscape of towering mountain peaks, rugged coasts, white sandy beaches and tropical rainforests rich in flowering plants. Western Samoa consists of a total of nine islands.
The two main ones, Savi’i and Upolo, are separated by a narrow strait. The state capital Apia, which resembles an old South Sea port in the early trading days, is located on the northern coast of Upolo. Wooden houses and colonial-style churches line the tree-lined main street that winds around the harbor. The main attractions include the Parliament Building, the Community Square, the Independence Monument and the former residence of Robert Louis Stevenson, the current seat of the head of state of Western Samoa. A journey around the island leads kilometer after kilometer through a dreamlike landscape in which cascading waterfalls, breathtaking views, tiny villages and coconut and cocoa plantations alternate.
On a cruise to Samoa, you will stop at the port of Apia. The pier for your cruise ship is very close to the city, which can be reached on foot in about 25 minutes. The popular Vaiala Beach can also be reached from the berth of your ship as part of a walk. Alternatively, you can of course also take a taxi, which will take you comfortably to the most beautiful sights of the city.
