Antwerp is the second largest city in Belgium after the capital Brussels. The lively cultural city in the Flanders region is located directly on the Scheldt and is only 88 kilometers from its mouth into the North Sea. The river forms a wide funnel mouth in the urban area of Antwerp, which allows ships to pass. In order not to disturb the shipping, you will not find any bridges in the Belgian metropolis, but you can only pass the Scheldt through underground tunnels. As a lively city on the waterfront, Antwerp also enchants with its port, which is known as the second largest seaport in Europe. As the world’s most important trading centre for diamonds, the port of Antwerp enjoys international fame. Already in the 15th and 16th centuries, the city was considered one of the most important trading capitals in Europe and made a name for itself as an area for the processing and trade of sinfully expensive diamonds.

Antwerp: diamond mills, the Flemish painters Paul Rubens and van Dyck, charming neighbourhoods and fantastic house fronts… Antwerp is much more. The Belgian port city is located in the north of Belgium in the Flanders region and has about 498,000 inhabitants. The seaport of Antwerp, which is located 80 km inland, is the second largest in Europe. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the city was one of the largest in the world thanks to the cloth trade. Famous artists such as Anthonis van Dyck, the Flemish painter, or Jan Brueghel the Elder, come from here. The beautiful old town centre is still largely preserved and attracts countless tourists to a city break every year. The Cathedral of Our Lady is worth seeing – a brilliant achievement from a building, the MAS Museum or the Antwerp Zoo, which is one of the most beautiful animal gardens in Europe. There will certainly be no boredom!
