Even today, Almaty is considered the center par excellence in Kazakhstan. Especially in the cultural area you will find all the important institutions, such as the State Opera, the State Ballet or the National Museum of Kazakhstan in the city. The cityscape of Almaty is as diverse as probably no other in Western Asia.

Alma-Ata (or Almaty) is one of the largest cities of Kazakhstan, which for a long time was the capital of the Kazakh Republic in the Soviet Union. Almaty lost the status of a capital in 1997, when the president of the country decided to make the city of Astana the capital of Kazakhstan. The name of the city was Alma Ata only from 1921 to 1993 – since 1993 the official name is Almaty, the name that the place already bore before.

Nevertheless, even today Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan with numerous sights, museums, entertainment centers – in short, with everything that makes this city one of the best destinations for visiting Central Asia.
