Which country is Algiers in?
The country of Algeria is located in the north-west of Africa. Its neighboring countries are Mauritania, Morocco, Mali, Niger, Libya and Tunisia. To the north is the Mediterranean Sea. Algeria consists for the most part of the Sahara Desert. On the Mediterranean coast there is a Mediterranean climate, and in the south there is a dry desert climate. About 2.2 million people live in Algiers, the capital of the Republic of Algeria.
The 1996 Constitution is aligned with Islamic values. Islam is the state religion of Algeria. Other religions should not be persecuted. The President is elected every five years. There is a parliament and a second chamber, whose members are appointed by the president or elected by the municipalities. Again and again there are uprisings among the people, who are dissatisfied with the political circumstances. People are demanding that human rights be better respected and that there be a free press. There are big problems in the country because of widespread corruption and the high unemployment rate, which is estimated to have been almost 50 percent at times. In the field of health, a lot has improved in recent years and more and more people have access to medical care.
