Ålesund: a Norwegian city on the west coast of the country, which is not the largest city in Norway with about 46,000 inhabitants – but certainly one of the most beautiful! Many people know the cities of Oslo or Bergen, but Ålesund is not (yet) one of the most visited cities in Norway. The city is not only beautiful itself, it is also the perfect starting point for excursions to the Geirangerfjord, the Trollstigen Strait or the surrounding Alps.

But what makes Ålesund so special? Here are my reasons why Ålesund is the most beautiful city in Norway and what you can experience there.
Not Oslo, Bergen or Trondheim, but: Ålesund. If you ask a Norwegian about the most beautiful place in his country, he will probably say exactly that. You can find out what makes the city on the fjord so unique here.
The best thing about traveling is the surprises. I experienced one of these when I came to Ålesund during a trip to Scandinavia. Åle… what? The city with almost 50,000 inhabitants is the largest in the Sunnmøre region and is located somewhat hidden on Norway’s west coast, about 380 kilometers as the crow flies from Oslo.
I came to Ålesund without expectations, but I left as a passionate fan. Why this was so, and why I am sure that you will also love the city – I have written down five reasons here.
