Until 1990, Albania was a communist country, completely closed from developments in Europe. Today, Albania is a parliamentary republic and elections are held regularly. Since 2009, Albania has been a member of NATO, and since 2014 it has been one of the candidates for accession to the European Union. In 2016, the country decided to reform the judiciary, as the European Union had demanded. Almost 2.9 million people live in Albania. The vast majority of the population is Muslim; about 30 percent are Christians. The different religions live peacefully together and tolerate each other. Just over half of Albanians live in large cities in the flat country towards the Mediterranean coast. The capital Tirana is by far the largest and most important city in the country. The birth rate in Albania has decreased in recent years, so the population is getting older on average.
