What country is Alaska in?
Alaska is the largest and northernmost state of the United States of America. It borders with Canada, but has no common borders with any other state of the United States. Part of the state is located north of the Arctic Circle in the Arctic.
Because Alaska is so far north, winters are long and cold. Four-fifths of the country’s surface is frozen all year round, so it is permafrost soil. Alaska is located in the cold-temperate climate zone.
Nevertheless, one is already noticing climate change. Even the famous Iditarod dog sled race suffers from this. The temperatures were so high at the last races that the sledge drivers only drove at night because it got too warm for their dogs. In addition, they could no longer drive across the rivers, because the ice is no longer so thick.
Although Alaska is almost five times larger than Germany, only about 740,000 people live there, about as many as in Frankfurt am Main. By far the majority of them live in Anchorage, the largest city in the state. Some of the population are Indians or Inuit. However, large parts of Alaska are almost uninhabited. Some places are so remote that no road leads to them. They are often accessible only by seaplanes or ships.
In the past, gold was searched for in Alaska, later oil was searched for. It has been found out that there is a lot of oil on the coast of the Polar Sea. However, the raw material must be transported in long pipes to the south of Alaska and then loaded onto ships. This also has major disadvantages for the environment. There is a special feature in the profits from the sale. Half of the annual profit is evenly distributed among the inhabitants of Alaska. That’s just over $1,000 per capita.
Today, Alaska is also the destination of many tourists. It is above all the almost limitless nature that fascinates many people in this remote area. There are many huge coniferous forests and lakes. However, due to the harsh climate, there are also large areas where trees no longer grow. There is tundra there. In addition, there are numerous high and snow-capped mountains and glaciers, as well as some volcanoes. The highest mountain in North America is also located in Alaska. The Denali is 6190 meters high. Many polar bears, brown bears and other wild animals roam through the vast natural landscape.
