Montgomery – The US state of Alabama bears the unofficial name “Heart of Dixie” (Heart of the South) in addition to the names “Cotton State” (cotton state) and “Goldhammer State” (Goldspecht State). This dates back to the time of the American Civil War, when Alabama was one of the seceded southern states and Montgomery was the capital of the Confederates.

The name “Alabama” goes back to the French name of the Indian tribe from the Muskogee language family known today as Alabama. To the northeast are the stony Appalachian Mountains, and between the Coosa River and Auburn the Piedmont Plateau with red, ferruginous clay soil; to the south and west is the mostly sandy coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico. The area around Montgomery and Selma has a particularly fertile, dark alluvial soil. Much of the area of the state is covered by forest. To the south is the Gulf of Mexico, into which the main river, the Alabama River, flows. Alabama is divided into 67 counties.
