This dates back to the time of the American Civil War, when Alabama was one of the seceded southern states and Montgomery was the capital of the Confederates.

The area around Montgomery and Selma has a particularly fertile, dark alluvial soil. Much of the area of the state is covered by forest. To the south is the Gulf of Mexico, into which the main river, the Alabama River, flows. Alabama is divided into 67 counties.
