The desert is omnipresent (4 / 5th of the territory) and limits the expansion of the swarming capitals on the coastal plain composed of steppes and more or less marshy expanses (sebkhas). The Rub al-Khali or “empty quarter” undoubtedly the largest sandy desert in the world (650,000 km2) is distributed between Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman and Yemen. The Emirati part is essentially composed of huge dunes (up to 200 m high in Liwa). To the north and east, the Hadjet and Omani mountains culminate at 1,500 m, their bare, harsh reliefs shelter rare villages and oases posted on the old trade routes. In Fujairah, on the east coast, the plumb lines of the mountains plunge into the waters of the Gulf of Oman.
